and you should like very frank, very earthy details in your love scenes to fully enjoy what the author can offer She doesn t shy away from what many other writers happily and readily gloss right over. The book pairs two subjects you wouldn t think would work together very kinky explorations along with a serious eye opening look at the sugar trade on an island loosely based on Antigua about eight or ten years before the slave trade is abolished in England I cringed and my gut twisted while reading many of the passages involving slaves Not pretty You wouldn t think those subjects would mesh at all, but in a weird way, they do It s not as if modern people don t get up to serious mischief while the problems of the world continue to rage on right in our faces However, at the heart of it, what holds the whole story together is a remarkable and easy to like heroine All you need to know about her is this quote from early in the book which portrays her character perfectly Whenever she wished she had had the moral courage to starve she was glad she had the good sense not to And, of course, Janet Mullany has an exquisite ability with words Her voice is like rustling silk and you can read any of her work for the subtle beauty of her style alone Her depth of knowledge of the time period is effortlessly conveyed in her writing Lockwood, aka Janet Mullany, is one of the most about to what degree you would oppose slavery if in fact you were relying on it as a means of income, maintaining your standard of life, etc As an erotica, this has some pretty sexy and very raunchy scenes Not a whole lot of pretty, flowery love scenes There s all kinds of pairings and some threesome action going on, but there s a whole lot of jealousy too As a romance this fails epically It starts out fairly well, with Allen and Clarissa on the ship together Neither character is actually likeable And they become even less so as time goes on Allen is the only character in this story who seems to improve Clarissa seems pretty selfish and shallow and it doesn t feel like she improves any there towards the endespecially since Allen s view spoiler proposal hide spoiler solved a bit of a problem for her and it s never made clear whether or not she actually loves him And this whole thing is kind of one miserable love triangle but a true one, since Clarissa loves March, March loves Allen and Allen loves Clarissa And I wouldn t really call this an HEA since Allen is the only one to sort of get what he wants This is a sexy and unusual story, but doesn t give me the happy feels at many historical novels A Certain Latitude was originally released under a different pen name, and it would have remained unread by me even at the temporary price of FREE if she hadn t reissued it under the one I already knew and trusted I couldn t tell you if what she refers to as substantial revisions made this a better book than the original, but I can say that A Certain Latitude far exceeded any expectations I might have had going in, and is as good as any other historical erotic romances I ve read What made this book so enjoyable for me was what I ve now come to expect in Janet Mullany s work, namely a plot that turns a well worn trope on its head and scenes of intimate passion which envelop not only the titular hero and heroine but also the supporting characters who enter their sphere with intentions both good and evil. The notion of civilized people devolving into depravity while isolated in aprimitive place where the rules of polite society don t apply is a trope less commonly found than it once was It dates back to a time when the old skool romances were the norm, and often featured ugly racial stereotypes as a lazy shortcut in lieu of actual character development But while it s true that the veneer of civilization began to decompose for Allan and Clarissa even before they reached their destination, it s clear that what remained was there all along, irrespective of what would take place on the island It needed only the close quarters of the ship to emerge, and the all too knowing encouragement of one dissolute and dominant man to be forced into full flower as they move inexorably toward their shared destiny.I must emphasize most strongly that A Certain Latitude is a true erotic romance in every possible way The sexual encounters involving each of the featured characters are absolutely essential to the plot, as well as those which occurred well before any of them had arrived on the island The scenes we experience as the story unfolds are explicit and unforgettable, with pairings that may shock those unused to such graphic detail It s rare to find such unflinching scenes in historicals that are written so well and in such loving detail, although they do exist in the works of Kate Pearce, Robin Schone, Sharon Page, and Maire Claremont Thanks to A Certain Latitude, Janet Mullany is now a member of that elite list for me, and I ll be seeking out all her other historicals for another chance to experience that special reading joy Um what Where do I begin HOW do I begin to try to review this book First let me say that I won about a book I ve purchased before giving myself a change to read it and discover all of the shocking details on my own, but I will say this this book was a combination of a naughty twist on Pride and Prejudice, Roots, and last but not least, throw in some Brokeback Mountain to confuse the daylights out of the reader All in all, I think the book holds great merit to be a good read The evidence in this is that I read it in less than 2 days even though I was thoroughly bewildered by most of the happenings However, I dont understand the relationship between Allen and March or the significance of their escapades maybe though, thats what some relationships are like Maybe some relationships dont hold any significance at all and dont need to in order to leave a lasting impression on our lives Wow wicked sex going on, so it was an enjoyable read
